Gazania [Gazania splendens]

Light: Full Sun Planting Date: Spring Beautiful daisy-like flowers with attractive foliage. Compact plants produce short stemmed, 2 inch flowers in white, yellow, orange, and pink. Vibrant for edges, borders or containers. Perfect for hot, dry or windy locations. Height 8 inches. Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Cover seed lightly and provide a soil temperature of 18-24°C (65-75°F). Space 6-8" apart in a very sunny location. Deadhead regularly and do not overwater.

Geranium [Pelargonium x hortourm]

Light: Full Sun / Tolerant of Light Shade Planting Date: Spring Geraniums are an all time favorite of many gardeners. They are inexpensive, easy to grow, and available in a variety of colours. Start inside at least 12 weeks before last spring frost. Cover seed lightly and then provide constant warmth; 21-24°C (70-75°F) and moisture. Bottom heat is essential (except for 'Black Velvet Series', which should be germinated cool, without bottom heat, at 16°C (60°F)). Cover with a black plastic bag or provide total darkness until germination occurs, in 5-15 days. Thereafter provide lots of light. Plant outside after last frost, 8-12" apart. Prefers full sun, but will tolerate light shade. Deadhead and remove yellowed leaves. Do not overfertilize. Overwintering Geraniums: Before the first frost arrives, carefully dig up the plants and shake the soil from the roots. Pot each plant in a planting mix, using pots which are no larger than necessary to hold the roots. Cut the stem height by half and cut off all yellowing leaves and flower heads. Put the pots in a cool, dark, place. Do not feed, but provide a small amount of water to keep the soil moist. In spring, move to a bright spot and increase the amount of water. When vigorous growth begins, fertilize with a well-balanced fertilizer. You should have another year of beautiful geraniums.

Gerbera Daisy [Gerbera jamesonii]

Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade Planting Date: Spring Start inside 8-10 weeks before planting out. Press seed into surface of potting mix, do not cover. Always use fresh seed, provide bottom heat of 21-24°C (70-75°F) and light. Should germinate in 15-30 days. Can be difficult and erratic. Transplant outside 1 week after last frost, into a full sun location or part shade location, 12" apart. Provide shade if summers are very hot. Prefers a rich, moist, fertile, slightly acidic soil. Water and deadhead regularly. May be grown inside as a houseplant.

Godetia [Clarkia amoena]

Light: Full Sun to Light Shade Planting Date: Spring Masses of 1 inch lilac blooms cascade freely over thick and compact foliage. An excellent choice for hanging baskets, borders and window boxes. Height 10-14". May be started 4-6 weeks early but stronger plants result from direct sowing after last frost. Sow seed in early summer once the soil has warmed up to 18-21°C (65-70°F). Lightly cover seed. Thin plants 8-10". Enjoys full sun or light shade and cool nights. Extremely tolerant of poor soil. Do not overfertilize.

Gomphrena [Gomphrena globosa]

Light: Full Sun Planting Date: Spring Compact plants topped with masses of long stemmed 1/2-1 inch globular flowers. Mixed varieties may contain an attractive array of purple, dark rose, soft pink, lavender-lilac and white. Height 20-24 inches. May be started inside 6-8 weeks before last frost. Soak seed in warm water for 24 hours. Lightly cover and provide warmth; 21-24°C (70-75°F) and darkness. Usually germinates in 6-15 days. May also be direct seeded after last frost. Transplant after last frost into a full sun location, 6-12" apart. Prefers average, well-drained, soil that is not too rich. Tolerates dry soil. Pinch out young plants to encourage branching.

Gypsophila (Baby's Breath) [Gypsophila elegans, Gypsophila muralis]

Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade Planting Date: Spring Tiny white blossoms with feathery grey-green foliage. Adds the finishing touch to all types of fresh cut bouquets. Easily grown directly in the garden. Ready in 5-6 weeks. Height 15-18 inches. Start Gypsy and Garden Bride indoors 6 weeks prior to transplanting. Scatter seed over the surface of the soil and very lightly cover. Provide a soil warmth of 21°C (70°F). Garden Bride can easily be direct seeded after all risk of frost, lightly cover seed. Make succession plants for using in bouquets all season. Thin or transplant outside after last frost date, 6-10" apart. Requires little care.

Heliotrope [Heliotrope arborescens]

Light: Full Sun Planting Date: Spring A wonderfully exotic plant with dark green leaves and dark blue 4-6 inch flower clusters above branching stems. The unforgettable vanilla fragrance is sensuous but not overpowering. Heliotrope's flowers are a first choice for every scented bouquet and will transform a terrace into a perfumed retreat. Height 2 feet tall. Start inside 10-12 weeks before final frost. Just cover and keep warm; 21°C (70°F). Germination is erratic. May take anywhere from 2-42 days. Plant outside when weather has settled, at least 2-3 weeks after last frost, 12" apart. Provide good air circulation.

Hibiscus [Hibiscus acetosella, Hibiscus trionum]

Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade Planting Date: Spring Easy to grow and flowers continuosly until early fall. Use in borders and containers. There are over 200 species of this flower in a vast array of colours. Height 14 inch. Hibiscus acetosella Will overwinter in zones 8 and up or in a greenhouse or sunroom. Very easy to germinate. Start indoors 8-10 weeks before last spring frost. Germinate at 20°C (68°F), covering lightly. Transplant seedlings into larger containers as soon as they are large enough to handle. Early pinching of shoots will encourage bushiness. After danger of frost has passed, plant out, spacing 20 inches apart. May produce large funnel shaped burgundy flowers. Prefers full sun or light shade. Hibiscus trionumStart inside 10 weeks before last frost. Germination will take place in 14-21 days at 18-22°C. Grows to about 14 inches high. Space 10 inches apart in garden.

Impatiens [Impatiens walleriana, I. auricoma]

Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade Planting Date: Spring This popular bedding plant is ideally suited for shaded and semi-shaded areas. A perfect addition to window boxes and planters. Start indoors 8-10 weeks before transplanting. Do not cover seed, just press lightly into soil. Appreciates bottom heat of 24°C (75°F), good air circulation and moist, but not soggy soil. Requires light and warm temperatures. Do not overwater as seedlings are susceptible to damping off. Plant outside about 2 weeks after last frost date. Space 4-6" apart. Adapts to shady or sunny areas, but must be watered faithfully in full sun. Note:'Jungle Gold' prefers rather heavy shade and soil that is kept on the dry side.

Germination takes place in 10-20 days. Transplant after all risk of frost, spacing 8-10" apart. Grow in large clumps for the best effect. Plants can be brought in and grown indoors for the winter, provided they are not hit by fall frosts.
