Geranium [Pelargonium x hortourm]
Light: Full Sun / Tolerant of Light Shade
Planting Date: Spring

Geraniums are an all time favorite of many gardeners. They are inexpensive, easy to grow, and available in a variety of colours.

Start inside at least 12 weeks before last spring frost. Cover seed lightly and then provide constant warmth; 21-24°C (70-75°F) and moisture. Bottom heat is essential (except for 'Black Velvet Series', which should be germinated cool, without bottom heat, at 16°C (60°F)). Cover with a black plastic bag or provide total darkness until germination occurs, in 5-15 days. Thereafter provide lots of light. Plant outside after last frost, 8-12" apart. Prefers full sun, but will tolerate light shade. Deadhead and remove yellowed leaves. Do not overfertilize.

Overwintering Geraniums: Before the first frost arrives, carefully dig up the plants and shake the soil from the roots. Pot each plant in a planting mix, using pots which are no larger than necessary to hold the roots. Cut the stem height by half and cut off all yellowing leaves and flower heads. Put the pots in a cool, dark, place. Do not feed, but provide a small amount of water to keep the soil moist. In spring, move to a bright spot and increase the amount of water. When vigorous growth begins, fertilize with a well-balanced fertilizer. You should have another year of beautiful geraniums.
