How and Why Link Building works

The key to making money on WebAnswers with Google AdSense is not only answering questions with quality answers but also having people view the questions that you were awarded. The more people that view and/or find your questions, the more money that you make. The best answer in the world won't make you a dime if no one sees it. The great part is that you can control both parts of this equation. You can write quality answers to any question on the site and you can help direct people to your answers by building links to them from other websites.
Link building on other websites helps drive people to your awarded answer by two methods, people clicking on the links that you left and helping place a search result higher in the search engine search result index. If you want to see an example of this in action do a Google search for the keyword "infatigo" and you'll see WebAnswers results in the top spot. Anyone doing a search for the term "infatigo" is very likely to click on the WebAnswers link and provide an opportunity for the user who was awarded the answer to the question a chance to make money. Because Google is such a large search engine will millions of active users, this position gets lots of clicks every single day. This isn't the only search term that ranks well in the search engines for WebAnswers questions, and you can help make sure that your questions rank just as high.
How does Google in the example above know that the question on WebAnswers is a relevant result for the search term infatigo? Google and the other search engines use a formula of content on the page, number of links pointing to that page and content of the link text to determine if something should be ranked for any given search term. In this example the question and the answer both use extensive use of the term infatigo, there are plenty of links on both WebAnswers and around the internet linking to this question and the anchor text of these links include the term infatigo. The result of this work is a high ranking question for the search term infatigo.
When you answer a question about a topic you are telling search engines that this question is related to the topic the question is about. This is why providing original and quality answers is key to making money. WebAnswers helps link up related questions to questions by our own method by showing related links on each question page with the text of the question this helps make the search engines aware of these questions. Sometimes questions can get ranked in the search engines with just our inner site linking, but often that isn't enough. That is why building links from other sites throughout the web to questions that have been awarded to you will make your signficantly more money by way of top natural search engine rankings.
Does this mean you have to build links to your questions from other sites to make money on WebAnswers? No you don't. Many users have made large sums of money without linking building or helping driving traffic to their awarded answers. Could these users have made more money by doing so? Absoutely!
Using the chicken and the egg metaphor what came first ranking high for a search term or building links to that question is hard to say, since some questions rank well with very few links, where others need more links to rank for a term. Once a question is out there and ranking for a search term other people on the Internet could link to your question for you thus helping you make money. There is one question on the site that consistently ranks well for it's search term that has had over 100 links created to that question by other people. That is part of the mystery and the challenge of the Internet.

How to do it

There are several places you can easily building links to your awarded answers around the web without having to buy domain names or even know HTML. These sources are
  • Blogs
  • Other Related Sites
  • Article Networks
  • Forums and Social Networks
Before you go putting links to your questions on every page on the internet that you can, you must know two other important factors in how search engines establish a link as a quality related link.
  1. Links pointing to Question pages on WebAnswers needs to be from a source of similar content. In the above infatigo example, a link from another site or blog about health and disease would help make that question rank higher where a link from a blog about auto body repair wouldn't really help as much. So make sure you do same type content linking to the type of content your awarded answer is about.
  2. The text of the links need to be varied. If you were going to build links to the infatigo question you would want to vary the content of that link text some. Yes, you would want some of the text links to say Infatigo; but also what is infatigo or signs of infatigo, etc etc. Variations of text not only help other possible terms rank for your question, but also to let the search engines know you aren't a computer generating all of these links.

Blogs

Blogs are one of the easiest ways to build links to something. Other people write blogs about anything and everything, so finding similar topic blogs to add comments and links to is quite easy, the hard part is just finding them.
The following is a good basic list of sites that are blogs or blog like
All of these blog or blogs have a search box that lets you type in things you want to search on to find blog posting you can comment on. With the infatigo example you don't want to just search for blogs about infatigo as there may be very few posts to comment on. But you could search for health, disease, doctors, or any other related health term. Since you answer questions on WebAnswers you know and understand, coming up with a related list of terms to search for should be easy.
Some sites such as wordpress allow you to tag posts with keyword to find similar posts. There are no results for posts tagged in wordpress with infatigo http://en.wordpress.com/tag/infatigo/ But there are with http://en.wordpress.com/tag/red-rash/ (note: use a - as a space when trying tags to find posts)
Once you have found a blog or search result of blogs to comment on, you will want to check for a couple things. Does the blog require you to sign up to post or not or if it uses the comment name, email, URL, comment format for the comments. If you want to sign up to add posts to those blogs, that is up to you, but the easier ones are the ones that don't require signing in.
Your name will be hyper-linked to the URL you type in, so use that to vary your text you want to use. Like the example above, have some that just say infatigo and others that say what is fatigo and so forth. You can use your email address or make a new one that you would want to use for link building. I'd recommend you use a new one as to limit any spam you might get as a result of this. For your comment add a decent amount of a quality comment to the post that was written. You don't have to add the link to the comment unless it really makes sense to do so. Usually it doesn't.
You can also start your own blog as well and write about anything, or fun questions with links back to WebAnswers. If you create your own blog the easy route is to just create a free blog with WordPress.com or Blogger.com or with the harder route of buying a domain name and installing WordPress (or other blogging software on your own). Creating your own blog is outside the scope of this document but a simple Search should help you find any answers you need. An example of a site that is used to link up questions on WebAnswer is this one: http://webanswers-blog.blogspot.com
There are millions of sites on the web about about everything. The more links you can point to your awarded questions from related content sources, the more money in your pocket. Try searching Google for keywords that will be used to find your question and get incoming links from those sites.
You can also use other QnA sites such as Yahoo! Answers or any from this list http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/question_and_answer_sites.php
Many of these QnA site let you add links as part of your answer which automatically get hyper-linked (much like WebAnswers does) making it very simple to just add a link as part of your answer or as a source of your answer like Yahoo! Answers. When answering questions make sure to provide a quality answer, much like you would on WebAnswers and not a simple answer like
"Go here for more info http://www....."
You are adding content to another site so you want to make sure you that you provide good content and don't come across as a spamer just adding links anywhere can. Like mentioned above, find related questions to the question that you are building links for.

Article Networks

Writing articles is more time consuming and harder then just adding comments or answering questions. This option of link building may or may not be for you. However, the up side of articles is that your articles, with your links, could be syndicated all over the web, thus allowing for many more of your links to be put out there for the time you spent on the article. Depending on the subject matter, it could take you 10 minutes to write an article or an hour.
When writing your article, know what site you are writing it for as some sites allow only 1 link per article, while others allow 3. If you disobey rules that these sites have in place, your article will get rejected and not displayed on their site. If you have to add your own HTML to add a link this is the code that links up a hyper-link <a href="http://www.webanswers.com">WebAnswers</a> where the http:// part is the link to your question and then change WebAnswers to whatever you want to title the link.
Some good article sites that you can write articles for are
Depending on the site, your article could post right away, might have to be manually reviewed before posting, or even require you to fix things about the article before or after it was submitted. These sites send you emails for various steps in the article process so make sure that you do check the email address you use for these sites.

Forums and Social Networks

Forums can be a good source of places to build links to your questions from, but you need to be careful not to come across as spam-like when doing so. Because of this, this should be the last resort places for link building. (and even one you can disregard.) Also Social Networks are a growing popularity, however the issue is finding relevant and related content on these networks to do create a proper link.

How to read My Awarded Questions

This page was created to help you find all of your awarded answers easily http://www.webanswers.com/account-awarded-answers.cfm and show you activity on those questions. Many of your questions will be getting traffic and page views without any external linking system in place. Over time you'll see that questions you build links to will receive as much, if not more traffic then those that had none.
Clicking on the headers of each column will sort that column by the relevant data of that column. You can easily see which questions had the most traffic yesterday or within the last week. More traffic equals more page views equals more money in your pocket. The inbound link column shows you how many links were found on the Internet linking to that question. The more links found the better chance you will have more page views on that question. There are no simple equations on how many links is enough because it depends on the competition for certain keywords. For example the keyword infatigo has very little competition where wanting to rank for the top spot for the keyword Florida would be very difficult.
Creating links around the Internet to questions that are already getting traffic will both help keep traffic coming into those questions as well as increase traffic to them because that question is ranking for something that people search for on a regular basis. Questions that are already ranking for some keywords will rank more easily for other variations of search terms. Creating links to questions that get little to no traffic could because of one of a few things. First the question only would show up for rare search terms that are not searched for often. Secondly it could rank better then it does currently for a search term if there were more links coming into the question. Thirdly it could be a seasonal search term that is only searched on during certain parts of the year. Taxes is a big search term from Jan to April 15 each year but not as much the rest of the year. Not very many people do searches for Chrsitmas Cookies in the middle of summer.
The secondary value of adding links to your questions is that people surfing the web on the pages that you placed links can click the link and come to your question via that method without doing a google search to find it.
